  • Keeps the Chief Engineer informed about any issues or irregularities.
  • If the Chief Engineer is absent or unfit for duty, the 2nd Engineer takes full charge of the engine room until relieved.

Engine Room & Watchkeeping Duties

  • Carries out watchkeeping duties as per schedule.
  • Stands stand-by duty during ship arrivals and departures at ports.
  • Looks after cargo-related systems such as the ballast water treatment plant, ballast pumps, valves, auxiliary engines, cranes, and other machinery.

Environmental Protection Duties

  • Supervises garbage incineration operations and records them in the Garbage Record Book.
  • Makes sure the vessel follows pollution-prevention rules, including ISO 14001 standards if applicable.
  • Works with the Master and Chief Engineer to achieve the company’s environmental safety goals.

Maintenance Duties

  • Plans, organizes, and carries out maintenance as per the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
  • Keeps the engine room clean, safe, and free from hazards.
  • Personally supervises the maintenance and repair of:
    1. Main Engine
    2. Cargo and Hydraulic Machinery
    3. Steering Gear
    4. Windlass and Mooring Equipment
  • Ensures all safety equipment in the engine room is in good condition.

Administration and Recordkeeping

  • Distributes daily maintenance and repair jobs among engineers and ratings.
  • Monitors the work and rest hours of engine staff.
  • Assigns tasks to engine room ratings and checks that they follow safety rules.
  • Trains junior engineers, cadets, and trainee electrical officers.
  • Conducts appraisal reports for ratings and updates the Chief Engineer about crew performance.
  • Maintains the Engine Log Book, PMS records, and inventory of spare parts, lubricants, and refrigerants.
  • Prepares requisitions for spares and ensures proper storage and labeling.
  • May also act as the Safety Officer, if assigned by the Master.

Essential Performance Duties

The 2nd Engineer must ensure that:

  • No critical machinery maintenance or testing is overdue.
  • All important machinery and equipment under his charge are always in working condition.
  • No safety devices are bypassed or left inoperative.
  • Minimum required spares are always available.
